Lothian Concert Recordings is a new venture based in Dalkeith covering Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Borders, set up and run by Sandy Horsburgh.
Lothian Concert Recordings aims to produce recordings which reproduce the experience of being in the audience. Microphones are therefore placed at a distance from the performers. Close micing techniques are usually not employed. Minimal electronic manipulation of the sound at the mixing stage is used in order to remain faithful to the sound of the ensemble.
Sandy sings with the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers. Having always appreciated the recordings that were made of their concerts and when the choir member who had made them returned to Germany, he offered to take on the responsibility. His equipment was chosen according to the following criteria: it had to be portable, quick to set up and put away and had to be capable of being left running for prolonged periods without attention or adjustment.
Sandy has been recording concerts for the past four years and has added to the basic equipment with which he started. It is now a little less portable, but capable of producing a much better sound on the finished recording.
